A record-setting girls’ performance and a close finish on the boys’ side marked the 58th running of Monday’s Westbrook-Gorham Rotary Club Patriots Day Road Race.
Deering’s Ashley Morgan took an impressive 14 seconds off of the 20-year-old girls’ mark, clocking in at 11:58, while Scarborough’s Erica Jesseman also bettered the record with her time of 12:02.
Joshua Wang, a Portland senior, finished first overall in 10:46, edging Scarborough’s Chris Harmon by three seconds on the 2.1-mile course, which started and ended at Westbrook’s Riverbank Park.
“I didn’t go out fast,” said Wang. “I just kept my pace the whole way through. It was good race.”
Harmon credited teammate Tyler Nelson with pushing the lead pack in the early going.
“(Nelson) ran a solid race all the way through. He may not have been with us at the end, but he set the pace,” Harmon said. “Where he left off, I took it and led for a bit, and then it was just Josh and me the rest of the way.”
Westbrook’s Aaron Tanguay received an award as the top male finisher from Westbrook or Gorham. He and Gorham’s Ryan Dyer were just two seconds apart.
“I felt (Dyer) coming up on me about a mile into it,” Tanguay said, “and from then on I could feel him a step or two behind me the whole way.”
The Rams’ Johannah O’Malley was the top local female finisher, while Scarborough netted the boys team award and Greely took home the trophy as the top girls team.
The race was run beneath overcast skies Monday morning, with temperatures in the mid-40s and a moderate breeze. Spectators might have been a bit chilly, but for the athletes the conditions were perfect.
“I was a little worried when I got here this morning. It was cold and I was walking around in pants and long sleeves and I was freezing,” said Tanguay. “I tried to warm up a lot before I took any clothing off, but once we got out there it felt good.”
Evan Embry finished third overall, just 10 seconds behind the winner, to lead a strong Bonny Eagle contingent. Teammate Eric Favreau took eighth place, while the Scots’ Ben Roy was 12th.
Dave Rolf, the race director, was pleased with this year’s event.
“We had a good representation of a lot of schools, and a large number of entries,” Rolf said. “Having a course record is always special. All in all it was a good day.”
