Hosts take Paper City tourney

Westbrook’s sixth grade girls travel team won the Paper City Classic, a tournament of 16 teams they hosted, without losing a game. In the championship contest, played March 26, Westbrook topped Portland’s Lincoln Middle School, 32-22. Megan Niehoff led the champs with 13 points, while Jessica Harris – who was named as tournament MVP – had eight. Westbrook wrestlers shine at regional tournament

Andrew Drouin took first place in his weight class and nine other Westbrook wrestlers finished among the top athletes in their classes at Saturday’s New England Youth Wrestling Tournament at the Cumberland County Civic Center. Drouin, an eighth-grader at Wescott Junior High School, wrestled in the novice division. Westbrook Wolfpack members Marty Rioux-Pena, Tyler Work, Ryan Lund and Nikolee Conrad were each runners-up, while Stephan Sawyer, Iain Whitis, Derek Breunig, Michael Cleveland and Andrew Rairdon all finished in fourth place.

Blazes ballplayers collecting food and bottles Saturday

The Westbrook Baseball Boosters and the Blue Blazes high school baseball teams – freshman, JV and varsity – are conducting a food and bottle drive on Saturday from 8 to 11 a.m. The goal of the boosters is that the 2nd annual Westbrook Blue Blazes Strike Out Hunger Food Drive and Bottle Drive will not only help provide much needed food for the community, but will also build a sense of community involvement and teamwork with the players and coaches. Baseball players will be going throughout the community collecting as much food as possible to donate to the Westbrook Food Bank, while the bottles will be a fundraiser for the teams. If anyone wants to bring a food or bottle donation, the high school baseball field is the drop-off location for all donations. A varsity Blue Blazes scrimmage game against Lawrence will follow at noon.

Local Winter Guard win competition

The Westbrook High School Winter Guard took first place this weekend at the New England Championships held in Dartmouth, Massachusetts. The Championship was sponsored by the New England Scholastic Band Association (NESBA). The winter guard competed in the Independent Regional A division. The first place finish follows a four star finish at the Maine Band Directors Association finals the previous week held at Biddeford High School. The winter guard unit consists of 19 students from Westbrook, Brunswick, and Deering High Schools. The Winter Guard is under the direction of Gloria Johnson and Margaret Pitt, assisted by Wayne Malloy, Liz Limmer, and Andrew Bard.
