Coach’s Comment: “This was another exciting year for the boys basketball program, with our 26th consecutive tournament appearance, the first in class A. Despite graduating Ben Thayer, Keegan Ballantyne, John MacKenzie and Joel Leconte from last year’s Western Maine “B” Champions and some major injuries during the season, the Rams proved to be very competitive in class A. Max Bass and Jeff Manchester were returning starters, and led stability to the group. Seniors Colin Hurd, Rob Connolly, Craig Woodbrey, and junior Andrew Dean all played heavy minutes for the first time this year and had outstanding seasons. Josh Tanguay and Matt Trask, two talented seniors, missed most of the year with injuries, but worked hard to get back for the tournament. In Max’s four years as a starter the Rams were 70-14.”

Girls Basketball

2006 Record: 12-6

Season Highlight “There were many – the Biddeford win, Christmas tournament games and the three-point shoot-out, senior night vs. Westbrook, prelim game vs. Marshwood and especially getting to and playing at the Civic Center!”

Coach’s Comment “They never quit! Not on their coaches or their teammates or even themselves, and that propelled them further than anyone would have predicted. I am proud of their success in their first season in Class A and am extremely excited about what the future can bring.”

Skiing

2006 Record Team finishes – Boys five 3rd places, one 2nd place; Girls – five 2nd places and tied for first once.

Coach Greg Prince

Season Highlight “Tough snow year, but all the skiers met the challenge. Everyone improved as the season went on and conditions worsened. Sally Patterson finish first for the Gorham girls every race and finished second in one of the meets just 2/10 of a second off the lead. Jack Prince (no relation) finished first for the boys every race and had six top five finishes. In three of the races he came in first. He had a great showing at the state meet, finishing fifth in the slalom and fourth in the giant slalom. He also went on the finish 10th in the New Englands.”

Awards Top skier awards went to Sally Patterson and Jack Prince.

Coach’s Comment “I would like to have given out a coaches award to everyone on the team. They showed up and gave it their best every race. There were snow conditions that would intimidate the best of skiers, but our skiers seemed to excel in these adverse conditions.”

Coach’s Comment “It was a very successful season for such a young team – almost all freshmen and sophomores, with one junior. I look forward to having everyone back next year.”

Boys Indoor Track

2006 Record 8-3 regular season in our first year in the SMAA; sixth in league meet; 9th at states

Season Highlight Scorers at the state meet included Justin Villacci (third in the 55 and 5th in the 200), Josh Maxwell (fourth in the hurdles), Kyle Perkins (fifth in the pole vault) and Joe Wise (sixth in the 55). Villacci, Maxwell and Wise joined Isaac Pease to take third in the 4 x 200 relay.

Coach’s Comment “It was a great season. TJ Poulin showed great dedication by showing up for practice all year despite being injured. We had a lot of underclassmen this season, and we’ll be one of the favorites next year, which will be just our second in Class A.”

Girls Indoor Track

2006 Record SMAA regular season: 8-5; SMAA championship meet: 4th place; Class A state meet: 9th place

Season Highlight “During our first season in the SMAA/Class A, the girls had some adjustments to make to running in the Expo (as we’ve been competing at USM in previous years). With a team of only 23 girls, Gorham performed very well during the regular season and had a very successful league championship meet, finishing fourth out of 13 teams. The team had some ups and downs in the state meet, but still managed a very respectable ninth place finish out of 23 teams.”

Seniors Gorham had only four seniors on the team this year: Kathryn Cyr, Kristi Hall, Johannah O’Malley and Sarah Popovics.

Coach’s Comment “Gorham had a very positive season for its first year in the SMAA and Class A. With only four seniors on a team of 23, Gorham completed the regular season with an 8-5 record and scored an impressive fourth place finish in the league championship meet. Gorham was led in the state meet to a ninth-place finish by senior Kathryn Cyr who scored second in the triple jump and sixth in the long jump. Other state scorers included sophomore Leigh Maniscalco (fourth, pole vault) and the 3200-meter relay team of Sarah Popovics, Megan Hamilton, Johannah O’Malley and Sarah McCullough (sixth place).

Boys Ice Hockey

2006 Record 20-2 (18-1 regular, 2-1 playoffs)

Season Highlight “Two playoff victories and playing in the final four of the western Maine class A ice hockey playoffs.”

Awards Four all-state selections; Christmas tournament championship

Coach’s Comment “This is probably the very best ice hockey team ever at Gorham HS. We will have a big loss with the graduation of team leader and senior captain Mark Schmidt. I have one of the best freshman talents in the state ready to elevate his game to the next level in David Gushee, with plenty of talent to surround him with. The program should be very respectable for the next few years.”

Coach’s Comment “We had a very good year. Our record doesn’t really show how we played. We had a lot of close games that we lost. We’ll have 12 of 15 players returning next year, including the whole first offensive line.”
