Eighth-grade student Bret Beaney was crowned Scarborough Middle School’s GeoBee champion Thursday afternoon and will have a chance to represent the school in the upcoming state championship.

Beaney managed to beat nine other students in the school’s six round competition that tests students’ knowledge of geography and understanding of geographical phenomena.

The geography bee is sponsored by National Geographic, which provides schools with the materials for the test. Each school’s winner will take a test to determine whether they qualify for the state competition that will be held in March. The winners from these state competitions will then move on to the national championship in late May.

Each social studies class in the school took a geography test and the 10 highest scorers were forwarded to the school’s final round. All 10 of the students scored a perfect score in the initial test.

During the final round, students were asked a variety of geography related questions for five rounds before Beaney was declared the winner.

The contest started off as a double elimination competition in the first round where students were asked to identify states bordering bodies of water. The competition then became single elimination and students were asked to either verbally answer questions or write them down on a piece of paper.

The participants were Mike Leatherbee and Julia Giancola, tied for eighth place; Jordannah Saunders and Calvin Stanford, tied for sixth; Jesse LeClair and Haela Booth-Howe, tied for fourth; Laura Suarez, third; Trevor Hamer in second place and Beaney in first.
