Dog bites dog, both quarantined

Two dogs will suffer through a 45-day house quarantine because of dog and human indiscretion. Like house arrest, the dogs are not allowed to leave their home turf and are disallowed contact with humans and other animals. The quarantine is police mandated because the dogs engaged in a tussle and neither had their rabies vaccinations.

On Dec. 21 a pitbull/lab mix running loose, bit a golden retriever on the ear. The golden, who lives in the Brentwood area, was out walking with its owner when attacked. The golden’s owner contacted police who instructed both pet owners to quarantine their animals for 45 days.

However, a home quarantine is preferable to the alternative, which could cause strain to both owner and pets. For owners, the strain of placing their dog in an out-of-home quarantine is financial, for pets psychological.

Shattered horseplay

On Dec. 18 at 8 p.m., a business in the strip mall on Route 77 called when their entry door was busted from the outside. Teenage boys were outside “horsing around,” said officials, when one was pushed into the door, shattering the glass. The boys, alarmed at their mistake, fled the scene but were identified and contacted. They will reimburse the owners for the damage.

Phony calls

On Dec. 19 at 7:30 I, Officer Dorval, met with a resident of the Broad Cove area regarding harassing phone calls.

Physical abuse

On Dec. 19 at 12:44 p.m. I, Officer Dorval, met with a resident of the Shore Road area regarding domestic abuse by an adult child. The woman, diagnosed with mental retardation, and over the age of 18, physically abused her mother. Police have been called to this home under similar circumstances on numerous occasions. The woman was brought to Maine Medical Center for psychological evaluation. It was advised that she be sent to a group home.

Car burglary

On Dec. 21, I, Officer Gaudette, met with a resident of the Mitchell Road area regarding a motor vehicle burglary that occurred sometime during the night. The unlocked Mazda was parked in the resident’s driveway. Taken from the vehicle were several CDs and an IPOD. No items have been recovered.

Stolen minutes

On Dec. 21 I, Officer Gaudette, spoke with a resident of the Mitchell Road area regarding a lost or stolen cell phone.

Fire Dept. activity

The Cape Elizabeth Fire Department responded to a South Portland call on Dec. 20 at 1:18 p.m.; a request for Scarborough coverage on Dec. 21 at 11:41 p.m.; an Ocean House Road alarm on Dec. 21 at 9:35 p.m.; a South Portland call on Dec. 25 at 10:37 a.m.; a Shore Road Police assist on Dec. 25 at 5:37 p.m.

Rescue Dept. activity

The Cape Elizabeth rescue responded to three calls from Dec. 23 to Dec. 25. One person was transported to Maine Medical Center and two required no transport.
