Pythian Sisters honor Groder

Carol Moore of the Narragansett Temple 111 Pythian Sisters of Buxton recently presented a 50-year pin to Joann Groder, most excellent chief.

Groder and her family have a long history with the temple. Her mother, who was mother of the temple, grandmother and a sister, Ronelda Waterman, was also a 50-year member. In addition, Groder has a daughter, Debra Thombs, and two granddaughters who are members.

Groder, a most excellent chief for a few years, stepped down once to build on a kitchen at their headquarters in Buxton Center. After being refused a grant, Moore, the excellent junior of the temple, said they built it themselves.

“We can do it,” Moore said Groder told their members. “And we did. We are not afraid of hard work.”

Moore said Groder put in motion a free Thanksgiving dinner for those who didn’t have somewhere else to eat last year after her hairdresser made the suggestion. This year marked the second annual dinner.

Groder is now working on Christmas baskets for the shut-ins, and Moore said Groder is always doing something for the people of Buxton.

“Now you remember, we are the oldest organization in this town. We don’t have much money, but we can do a lot,” Moore said Groder reminds the their members.

Robey on dean’s list

Christina Robey has been named to the dean’s list for the fall semester at Johnson & Wales University in Providence, R.I.

Robey is pursuing an associate degree in travel and tourism management from the university’s Hospitality College on the Providence campus.

Honors for field hockey freshmen

Kathy Campbell of SAD 6 reports that the Bonny Eagle High School freshman field hockey team recently was honored with the raising of the honor flag.

The team had the highest grade point average for the fall among sports teams at the high school.
