With only two seniors back this winter, Bonny Eagle wrestling coach Brooks Clark was hoping to see signs of early progress at Saturday’s Westbrook Invitational Tournament.

His young wrestlers surpassed his expectations.

Keyed by individual championships from freshman Dalton Groeger (103 pounds) and senior Jack Lovell (130 pounds), the Scots took second place as a team Saturday behind Massabesic’s experienced lot.

“I was pleased with the effort and maturity of a young squad,” said Clark. “Going into the tournament, I was hoping for a top-four finish. To come in second, with a real chance to win, was great. The kids are working hard and improving little by little.”

Massabesic totaled 182A?1?2 points to win the team title, while Bonny Eagle totaled 153 points. Mountain Valley, Biddeford, Sanford, Deering, Windham and Cony finished behind the Scots.

Windham showed some punch in the tournament, thanks much to Tony Kostopoulos’ individual championship in the 275-pound division. Kostopoulos said he still has some improving to do, but had confidence going into Saturday’s first big winter test.

“I don’t think I’m in the shape I should be, but I’m getting there,” Kostopoulos said, adding that, heading into the tournament, “I thought I had it.”

Windham’s big senior, 38-4 and third in the state in this weight class last winter, was pleased with how his teammates started the season.

“As a team, I thought we looked a lot better than we had in the past,” he said.

Windham’s Josh Woodbury also had an outstanding tournament, taking third overall in the 189-pound class with a win over Deering’s Denton Weimer in the consolation round finals.

For Bonny Eagle, Groeger pinned Massabesic’s E.J. Rosario in the championship round to win his individual title and Lovell won over Adam Blow of Sanford to cinch his crown.

Coming close to individual championships were Bonny Eagle’s Max Dunzik, who fell to Massabesic’s Peter Gilman in the 135-pound championship match; heavyweight Dan Avery, who lost an 8-1 decision in the finals to Kostopoulos; and Bobby Dedovic, who lost in the finals to Allen Stein of Deering in the 119-pound class.

Clark also credited his assistant coaches for the team’s early steady improvement.

“In addition to coach (Michael) Kane, who is an excellent coach, we are thrilled to have Ted Reese back at Bonny Eagle,” he said.

Reese was the Scots’ successful wrestling coach during the 1980s and 1990s, winning several Coach of the Year honors while directing Bonny Eagle wrestlers.

“He has great energy and knowledge and can still do more push-ups than the kids,” said Clark about his latest assistant.

Windham was scheduled to host Bonny Eagle and Portland Wednesday. Windham has an away match at Massabesic, a 1 p.m. start, Saturday. The Scots’ next match is away at Biddeford, with Westbrook and Wells, Dec. 21. The Scots host their own invitational tournament Dec. 28, beginning at 9 a. m.
