A Camp Sunshine counselor now awaits trial in Connecticut for the alleged sexual assault of a fellow counselor while traveling out of state.

Police arrested Michael Newton, 58, of Rochester, New Hampshire, early Sunday morning at a Super 8 motel in Cromwell, Conn. after a 17-year-old girl, whom he was traveling with, alleged he sexually assaulted her during the night.

According to authorities, Newton and the girl, both volunteers at Camp Sunshine in Casco, had been driving from Maine to New York to meet with friends they knew from camp. The exact nature of their relationship was unknown at press time.

“Allegedly, Newton was tired,” Cromwell Police Chief Anthony Salvatore said, “and asked to spend a period of time to get some rest (at the motel.)”

At 2:45 a.m., Cromwell police responded to a call from the victim and arrested Newton at the motel.

Newton is now being held at the Hartford Correctional Center on $25,000 bond for second-degree sexual assault. The “second-degree” charge is less serious than “gross sexual assault” because Newton presumably did not use physical force to hold the victim against her will. Rather, police define the charge as non-consensual “inappropriate touching” below the waist.

Camp Sunshine’s Executive Director Matt Hoidal declined to comment on the alleged assault, but did release a written statement on behalf of the camp. In the statement, Hoidal asserted the camp’s long history as a non-profit retreat for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families. He also noted that the camp is staffed by roughly 1,200 volunteers who help with recreational leadership, childcare, food service and other responsibilities.

“We have recently been apprised that one of our volunteers has filed a criminal complaint against another volunteer alleging that she was sexually assaulted. The alleged incident occurred away from the premises of Camp Sunshine, and not in the course of Camp Sunshine business,” Hoidal wrote. “Although we regret that these charges have been brought within our volunteer community, we are confident that the authorities will bring this matter to a satisfactory conclusion and we will cooperate fully during the investigation.”

The victim has returned to her family’s residence in Maine, police say, and the case is still under investigation. Cromwell police say they will be in contact with police agencies in both Maine and New Hampshire to assist in their investigation. Preliminary investigation reveals Newton has no prior felony convictions.
