If you’ve gone to a Westbrook High School field hockey game this year, you’ve seen one of the Wescott sisters in action.
What level? It doesn’t matter. Freshman, junior varsity or varsity – there’s a Wescott on each team, and they’ve helped the program post a winning record at each level.
Alicia is a senior and plays defense on the varsity, which compiled a 10-4-0 mark this season and, at press time, was preparing for a regional quarterfinal game in the state tournament.
Elizabeth, a sophomore, was the goalkeeper for the 7-4-3 JV squad, while first-year student Kristen played on the freshman team, which was 7-3-3.
Parents Jennifer and John have tried to attend as many of the contests as possible, though sometimes one team is playing at home, while another is on the road. The varsity and JV generally are scheduled back to back, so that makes things a little easier.
“As much as I hate missing some games, we explained to Kristen that this is Alicia’s senior year,” says Jennifer.
“It’s tough. There’s a game every day,” John says. “If it’s not home it’s away. We’ve gone to all the home games because it’s easier to stay here.”
Alicia started playing field hockey when she was in sixth grade. Her younger sisters followed along.
“She got me into it,” says Elizabeth. “I attended some of her games and I just liked it.”
Jennifer Wescott notes some of the differences between the girls playing styles: Alicia is strong and Kristen is quick. As for the middle daughter: “It’s very stressful when Elizabeth is in goal,” says the keeper’s mom.
Not only do opposing players shoot a very hard ball at her, but the pressure of allowing goals is, of course, worst on the goalie.
“Sports have always been there,” Alicia – who also plays on the school basketball and softball teams – says of her family, “and we’ve always played the same sports.”
In seven years the girls’ parents have had to learn all about field hockey, though on the sideline they still ask an occasional question.
“I’ve enjoyed every bit of it from sixth grade on up,” says John. “There’s always field hockey equipment hanging in the hallway, but it’s been fun.”
