September 1 marked the one-year anniversary of Brian Gardner’s untimely death. In lieu of flowers, Gardner’s family had asked for donations to be made to the Portland Water District’s Sebago Lake Ecology Center. Gardner, a Standish resident had a passion for the lake and wanted to protect it for generations to come.

After careful consideration, the water district decided to use the funds to establish a unique memorial for Gardner that all local residents could enjoy. Many people stop by Chadbourne’s Landing to reflect and enjoy the beauty of the lake and the views of Mt. Washington. Now, instead of sitting on the ground, they have a park bench made out of 100 percent recycled materials to sit on. And on the bench, a plaque reads, “In memory of Brian Gardner – Sebago Lake Enthusiast.”

The park bench is installed at the public right of way at Chadbourne’s Landing.
