Should President Bush meet with Cindy Sheehan, the mother of a soldier killed in Iraq who is currently protesting near Bush’s Crawford, Texas ranch?

Delmar Needham, 75, Windham

“Very definitely not. If he met with her he’d be setting a precedent and would have to meet all the mothers. At this point, I think she’s creating damage to our boys overseas.”

Carl Kelley, 62, Naples

“Out of respect for her great loss and just to satisfy her wants for understanding why it had to happen, he needs to meet with her. That would be a natural satisfaction. A lot of people have wondered why he hasn’t met with her. It’s very disrespectful he hasn’t. He just isn’t living up to what he preaches as far as being a very religious, personable president.”

“It depends on her motives. There could be feelings of guilt because she pressured him to join or she could have had no say and it was his decision to join. If so, why should she have a say in something that was his decision?”

Natalie Hutchinson, 38, Windham

“Yes, he should meet with her as a gesture of respect for what all the military families have gone through if nothing else. I realize he can’t meet with every single family but it seems pretty cold that he is so pointedly ignoring her and her pain and what she is trying to say.”

Dian Burns, 66, Standish

“Yes. It’s just the decent thing to do. He has no good reason to ignore this woman. It’s totally bizarre. What is he thinking? He has said publicly that he needs to get on with his life. What about her? He needs to meet with her so she can get on with her life. This is a man who cannot bend. In his mind, he can’t do it because he thinks he’ll look weak. Well, in my mind, his inaction and lack of compassion already make him look weak.”

Shannon Leazier, 32, Windham

“If it were my son who was killed over there, I would want to talk to him myself. If her son went over and died for his country, why can’t the president show her enough respect and see her face to face?”
