The agency looking to build an affordable housing project off Reed Street that was rejected by the Planning Board has filed an appeal in Superior Court.
The action filed on July 20 by the Reed Street Neighborhood Housing, LP, names the city as defendants and seeks to overturn the Planning Board’s June 21 vote to reject the project, claiming the decision was not supported by sufficient evidence.
Cullen Ryan, the executive director of Community Housing of Maine, the group that brought the proposal before the city, did not return calls seeking comment.
City Administrator Jerre Bryant said last Friday he had not yet seen the court papers, and was unable to comment on the matter. Bryant is out of the office all this week on vacation.
On May 3, the board voted, 4-3, to deny the application of Community Housing of Maine to construct the project known as Clearwater Bend.
After a request by the applicant, the board voted unanimously to reconsider its vote on May 23. The board reconsidered the issue on June 21, but board members did not change their votes.
Board members Anna Wrobel, Luc Bergeron, Brian Beattie and Rene Daniel voted to deny the application. Board members Christopher Parr, Greg Blake and Chairman Ed Reidman voted in favor of the project.
While they said they were in favor of affordable housing being built in Westbrook, Planning Board members who voted against the project said they felt the project, and the traffic associated with it would overwhelm the Reed Street neighborhood.
As of press time, a court date had not been set for the case.
