Has government finally grabbed us at both ends? Here is a quote from John S. Coleman, “The point to remember is that what the government gives it must first take away.”

When it comes to taxes do you have a mortgage and still pay rent to the town for the privilege to live in your own home? We know that taxes are necessary in order to provide essential services but must we in Maine continuously pay beyond what is reasonable and just? The growth of government in Maine coupled with salaries that are steadily increasing are resulting in a pay disparity between government employees and the average worker.

For example, Maine teachers appear ill-provided for and have a below-average salary compared with teachers from other New England states. However, one must also compare teachers’ salaries with those of other Maine workers. The Tax Foundation shows a figure of $33,844 for income per capita in our state. Teachers’ salaries in Maine average nearly $40,000 and this does not include such benefits as insurance or pensions. In government as in other places of employment, the higher the position, the greater the salary. But, in Maine, it is remarkable that town managers and school superintendents make more than the governor.

The crux of Maine’s Number 1 ranking in tax burden certainly is enhanced by the horrendous budget of the Department of Human Services which has an enormous responsibility for the welfare of citizens but, by the way, where did that money go?

Is there any good news in Maine? Yes, Maine does have one spectacular growth industry and it’s skyrocketing. Could it be…welfare? It is apparent that the welcome sign on the Turnpike must be changed to “Maine, The Way Welfare Should Be!” Give it and they will come, and they certainly shall.

Now refer back to the quote at the beginning of this letter. The Supreme Court decision regarding Eminent Domain gives our government the power to seize our property not only for the good of the public but for private development. Glad we don’t live near Keddy Mill.

We were educated to believe our Constitution gave us certain unalienable rights. Now must we presume our tax dollars will be used to seize our homes?
