Cape Elizabeth Family Fun Day will take place on Saturday, June 18, in Fort Williams Park.
The parade this year will begin at 10:30 a.m. and starts on Shore Road near the Cape Elizabeth Irving Station. It will progress down Shore Road and into the second entrance of Fort Williams Park. People and neighborhoods are encouraged to make floats and participate in the parade. Awards for different categories of floats will be presented.
A new addition to the parade this year is the inclusion of the Kora Highlanders drum and bagpipe band, the Kora Cycle Corps, the Kora Mini-Racers and Kora Klowns. Town Councilor and member of the Family Fun Day Committee Michael Mowles and longtime police officer Vaughn Dyer are both members of the Kora Highlanders drum and bagpipe band.
In addition to the numerous local non-profit and booster groups selling food, activities, organized games, competitions and face painting there is also a day-long entertainment schedule, including jazz combos at noon and 1 p.m., a talent show at 3 p.m. and “Fun in the Foam at 4.” The entertainment extends into the evening hours for the first time this year.
“The evening program is especially geared toward teenagers,” said Mowles. Beginning at 5 p.m. a DJ will perform until The Free Refills, a local high school ska band, takes the stage at 7 p.m. At 8 p.m. Red Beard and the Ramblers, a high school rock band consisting of graduating seniors, will perform.
The fireworks are back this year after a several-year hiatus and will begin at 9:30 p.m. They have changed location, however. This year the fireworks will be launched out over the water from the field south of Portland Head Light and the best viewing will be from the area of the flagpole north of the lighthouse. Plenty of parking is available, but the automobile entrance into the park is closed by 9 p.m.
“There was quite a battle for the funding for the fireworks this year,” Mowles said. The funding for next year’s fireworks is already included in next year’s budget, he said. “We are trying to build this back up to a big town event.”
The rain date is Saturday, June 25, and will be announced, if needed, on the town Web site at www.capeelizabeth.com.
