No plans to rebuild South Portland’s historic fishing shacks

To account for sea level rise and flood zone risk, the construction would be costly.

The designation doesn’t mean the beach is unsafe for swimming, but it does make the city eligible for state grants to improve the water quality.

The historic fishing shacks that were swept away in the Jan. 13 storm played a big role in the lives of South Portland residents.

People as far away as Florida and Texas have donated thousands already to rebuild the historic fishing shacks at Fisherman’s Point.

Not enough is being done to either mitigate or adequately communicate the extent of the contamination at the popular beach.

The plan creates a vision for the area for the next 10-15 years.

A force main sewer pipe near Southern Maine Community College burst on Thursday, prompting the closure of the beach until next week.

The city of South Portland will use discarded Christmas trees in efforts to restore the dunes.

A plan to restore the dunes between Willard Beach and Myrtle Avenue is in development, pending approval by the Maine DEP.
