Georgetown Broadband, a company formed in 2020 dedicated to bringing high-speed internet access, started installing fiber-optic cables on March 24. The group’s leaders hope to begin providing service sometime this summer.

Letters: Referendum would prevent foreign influence of Maine elections; Support legislation to alleviate Maine’s housing crisis
Referendum would prevent foreign influence of Maine elections As a lifelong Mainer, I was deeply troubled to see, during our grassroots battle with CMP/IBERDROLA to protect our western forests from destruction by an unyielding utility juggernaut interested NOT in our forest, our small creatures and flora but only shareholder equity. Approximately 70% of Maine voters […]
Giving Voice: Brunswick shelter gives fresh starts year round
It’s finally spring. The sun is shining, people are out and about and fresh starts are happening everywhere — spring cleaning, clearing things out, getting uncluttered with things you don’t use and never will — letting in the warm spring air…(happy sighs). “Fresh Start” sounds like something you’d find on a hallmark card or on […]
David Treadwell: The danger of Dominion Theology
Texts written after the 2020 presidential election between Ginni Thomas, wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, and Mark Meadows, then the Chief of Staff for President Trump, confirm the danger that dominion theology represents to American democracy. Dominion theology (also known as dominionism) is a group of Christian political ideologies that seek to institute […]
Guest column: More gate money, more second chances for former Maine inmates
Nowadays, you grudgingly fill your car with gas. “Over $50! How!” you painstakingly mumble to yourself, hoping no one heard your complaints and outrage. What’s more incredible than the increasing gas prices is how quickly those $50 in your pockets can vanish into thin air, leaving nothing more than a dark void of gum wrappers […]
The Maine Idea: Bringing some fresh air to the governor’s race
Maine’s races for governor are usually multi-candidate affairs. The first one I covered, in 1986, featured four entrants, all of whom had a plausible claim to the office. Of the two independents, John Menario, a former Portland city manager, had extensive managerial experience; Sherry Huber was a noted environmentalist. Then there were the party nominees, […]
Gordon Weil: Are you conservative, liberal or moderate?
Conservative, liberal, moderate. That’s how politics divide. Which are you? If you classify yourself in one of these groups, it should tell me a lot about your party affiliation and your views on major issues. Maybe not. Americans are continually reminded about this split in political orientation and the resulting deep partisanship. But some new […]
Nokomis freshman Cooper Flagg impresses at USA Basketball minicamp
The 6-foot-7 Flagg continues to make national noise while working with USA men’s junior national team in New Orleans.
Intertidal: Springtime on the seacoast
Spring is a time for sprouting. Everywhere you look, buds are forming, and tiny green shoots are emerging from the newly softened ground. I often go on walks to places with sunny southern exposures to look for the first crocus or daffodil to poke through. More light and more warmth. Less easy to see is […]
Tom Purcell: We must fix the nursing shortage
Where did all the nurses go? One of my family members ended up in the ER for a week after a bad fall. The hospital we chose and its staff were wonderful in every way, but this time, one important thing was missing: an appropriate number of nurses to deliver superior care. The nurses who […]
