Portland City Council approves renaming of park following request from family

The councilors vote unanimously to change the name of Bedford Park to Noyes Park in city ordinance.

A proposal before the Charter Commission would increase stipends from $6,947 annually to about $17,900.

The decision comes as the Charter Commission is considering a clean elections proposal that would publicly fund municipal candidates.

The commission has until May 9 to issue a preliminary report and until July 11 to come up with final recommendations.

City councilors say they prefer to look at putting conditions on individual licenses rather than amending ordinances.

A proposal tying hazard pay wages to any mask mandate is still expected to go before the council this month.

Some business owners welcome the change, saying they don’t want to police enforcement, while others say they may still require masks.

The 7-2 decision to repeal the mask requirement in indoor public places takes effect in 10 days.

The city joins Bangor and more than 330 other communities nationwide that have restricted sales of flavored tobacco.
