Plastic bag ban, delayed by pandemic, goes into effect July 1

Starting next week, most Maine retailers will no longer be allowed to bag customers’ purchases in plastic.

Enforcement of the law has been temporarily suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Consumers would still be able to buy straws in stores.

But the U.S. blocks demands to set a global target to reduce use of or phase out single-use plastics.

The Senate voted Tuesday to approve the statewide ban, which already passed in the House but needs further votes in both chambers.

Lawmakers vote 91-52 to support the bill, which has been endorsed by the state’s largest retailers and environmental advocacy organizations.
