Snowstorm to bury parts of Maine, including Greater Portland, on Friday

The National Weather Service is predicting that 8 to 12 inches will fall in southern and western areas.

The storm, which could bring a foot or more of snow and 50 mph wind gusts, is expected to cause problems along much of the East Coast.

Temperatures remained in the single digits in many parts of Maine on Tuesday as the state experienced its coldest weather since 2018.

A winter weather advisory is in effect until 10 p.m.

Between 4 and 7 inches is expected throughout much of the state. A year ago Maine had 19 inches of snow on the ground by this date.

Bath and West Bath received about 5 inches of rain in a 48-hour period, while Windsor got 6 inches, the National Weather Service says.

The storm likely will bring torrential rain to the state beginning Sunday, but not the full force of the hurricane.

The city had 9.53 inches of rain last month, surpassed only by the 10.84 inches that fell in July 1915.

The state escaped serious damage from the remains of Tropical Storm Elsa, which hammered other parts of the East Coast.

Wiscasset students dismissed from school at noon, but students in nearby Brunswick and Bath are expected to finish the school day.
