After reading about all the lies that George Santos put forth to be elected to Congress, and the silence of the Republican leadership regarding such behavior compared to their cries about voter fraud when it comes to elections that Democrats win, I must say I am astounded. Such hypocrisy! Willliam J. Leffler II Kennebunkport

Letter to the editor: To reduce accidents, keep your headlights on
Research shows that they make vehicles more visible in the daytime as well as after dark and in bad weather.
Letter to the editor: Columnist homes in on how inspection program exploits Maine drivers
Jacob Posik’s Jan. 1 column, “Let’s end Maine’s inspection program” (Page D2), is right on the mark. The program is a sham, run for the auto repair industry to increase customer traffic through their door, allowing the numerous unscrupulous repair shops to take advantage of entrapped motorists to sell unnecessary repairs with no measurable positive […]
Letter to the editor: Easement was in place long before approval of new Moosehead rules
We appreciate the article “New rules will protect Moosehead Lake area from sprawl” (Dec. 15, Page A1), regarding the decision of the Maine Land Use Planning Commission to approve a new zoning plan for land around Moosehead Lake. We write to clarify one aspect of the article, which suggests that “more than 359,000 acres will […]
Letter to the editor: Gripes about relief checks become pretext for jabs at Maine governor
Re: A letter published Jan. 1, headlined “Mills’ checks bungled for thousands” (Page D3): It’s not surprising for someone to be upset at not having received their $850 inflation relief check. However, the author of that letter made a number of assertions that call for clarification. Referring to these checks as a “handout” is disingenuous […]
Letter to the editor: Seat belts should be part of the solution to rising Maine road fatalities
The device has been around for generations, and it’s surprising that last Sunday’s editorial didn’t mention lack of compliance as a factor in traffic deaths.
Letter to the editor: State inspection of motor vehicles key to Maine road safety
Re: “Commentary: Want to modernize Maine’s vehicle inspection program? Eliminate it.” (Jan. 1): I couldn’t disagree more with the Maine Policy Institute’s monumentally bad idea to eliminate vehicle inspections in Maine. A family business I grew up in as a young man did vehicle inspections for the state of Maine. You could not imagine the […]
Letter to the editor: Americans shouldn’t tolerate any political liars
While denouncing George Santos, the editorial board is silent on whether accountability for falsehoods varies by party affiliation.
Letter to the editor: CMP, PUC to blame for ever-higher Maine utility bills
Re: “Letter to the editor: Thank corridor foes as CMP bills rise” (Jan. 6, Page A4): I have an alternative explanation to Delbert Reed’s viewpoint as to why Central Maine Power bills have grown so high. The actual reason CMP bills have risen so dramatically are primarily twofold: First is the corporate mindset of CMP […]
Letter to the editor: Comparing, contrasting football games in light of Hamlin’s serious injury
Bigger, faster, stronger. (More compassionate?) It was probably 1938 or 1940, when Dad took me to Orono to watch the Maine Black Bears play the University of Rhode Island team. I wasn’t really much of a football fan, but I loved the boisterous crowds of maybe 3,000, and the prospect of ice cream and those […]
