The housing market doesn’t need more tax credits and subsidies. It needs less micromanagement and more freedom for developers.

Letter: Students need to own their debt
I have little sympathy for allegedly smart people, headed off to college, who were apparently unable to do the simple math of computing what their monthly loan payment would be upon graduation. Why should I, in my retirement, be obligated to help these people out? Richard Williams East Waterboro
Letter: A dazzling celebration of Maine
We had a wonderful time at the Arundel Historical Society’s 9th Annual Heritage Day on Sept. 14. The weather was perfect and the event was thoughtfully organized. Upon arrival, myriad greeters welcomed us with enthusiasm and cheer, furnishing us with an informative timeline of the day’s events and list of participants. Then, a parking volunteer, […]
Letter: Divestment resolution a dark stain on Portland
Most Portlanders were surprised to read that the Portland City Council had adopted a one-sided resolution on the Israel-Hamas War, penalizing Israel. Ignored entirely was the fact that Hamas initiated hostilities by attacking unarmed civilians enjoying a dance and then raping and murdering other civilians in their homes. Letter: Don’t be misled by tariff proposal
In listening to the economic proposals coming from the presidential candidates, one thing stands out to me and I believe it needs clarification. Letter: Yard South op-ed left a few things out
Jeremy Doxsee’s excellent Sept. 5 op-ed about the Yard South Project in South Portland (“Yard South project has untold potential for chaos“) left a few things out. FEMA encourages all cities to have an emergency operations plan. The plan is supposed to be updated and included in zoning changes. Yard South is at the end […]
Letter: Mayor Dion’s discarded needle proposal makes sense
Scaling back the number of needles the city of Portland gives out is worth a try.
Letter: Storefronts may be vacant, but parking spaces aren’t
Portland officials may want to take a closer look at the real reason behind those empty windows on Congress Street.
Letter: Divestment vote blindsided Portland’s Jewish community
The Portland City Council blindsided residents by voting to divest funds from Israel. Councilors knew that action would be controversial, yet they chose not to publicize it ahead of time. There was no mention of the proposal in the city’s weekly newsletter, as there is when the city seeks input on topics such as the […]
