Federal parks director to hear from Mainers on North Woods national monument

Jonathan Jarvis plans May 16 meetings in Maine as the Obama administration considers a step toward a national park in the Katahdin region.

It would be the first step toward the creation of a national park as well as desperately needed jobs.

The proposal is inspired by the debate over plans to create a national monument or national park in the Katahdin region.

The 77-71 vote sends a message but can’t stop the presidential designation, which supporters hope will lead to a national park.
