Pandemic forces changes to Preble Street’s work with homeless

Shelters have worked quickly to redefine themselves, setting aside spaces for people to isolate or quarantine.

It’s hard to fathom how much has changed and how far we may have to go.

The nonprofit is providing 50 emergency shelter beds at the Sullivan gymnasium in a setting that allows people to follow social distancing protocols.

A group of residents and others are working on citizens’ initiative to limit the size and control operations of such a facility.

One policy amendment would require assurances that steps will be taken to pursue a statewide network.
