A senior American official traveling with Blinken stressed the U.S. commitment to pressing Israel to protect civilians in Gaza, increase humanitarian aid supplies, and rein in and punish extremist Jewish settler violence against Palestinians in the West Bank.

The United States, Israel’s strongest backer, has warned Hezbollah and its patron Iran against entering the fray and has sent warships to the Mediterranean, a move Nasrallah said ‘will not scare us.’

Blinken will be introducing a new element to the U.S. list of priorities: the need for Israel and its neighbors to begin to consider what a post-conflict Gaza will look like, who will govern it, how it can be made secure and how to establish an independent Palestinian state.

She also reiterated her support for a two-state solution and her criticism of the Israeli government’s settlement policies.
