Bates College lifts its lockdown after 12 days

With COVID-19 cases declining among its students, Bates Tuesday lifted a lockdown that it imposed April 1 to stop a serious outbreak.

Students will have been kept mostly in their rooms for at least 12 days. to fight against ‘relatively large outbreak.’

Bates College has 77 COVID-19 cases among students and two-thirds of its isolation housing is full.

The Lewiston-based campus hit a new high of 60 active cases among students after it locked down the campus last week.

With 34 active cases, students are told to stay inside their rooms until next Tuesday to reduce spread of highly contagious virus.

Clayton Spencer said ‘anti-Asian bias has reached disturbing levels’ and called on Lewiston college ‘to act for justice.’

After canceling commencement last year because of COVID-19, college officials happy to see seniors off in person this semester.

The officer, a 25-year veteran, also told students that Black students ‘get away with a lot more’ because security is afraid to deal with them.

With more vaccines available, the Lewiston-based college hopes student life will no longer have so many COVID-19-related restrictions.
