Downeaster to suspend service temporarily starting Monday

The rail service, which had already been curtailed because of the coronavirus, will halt service until April 30.

Starting Monday, the rail line will operate only one round trip per day between Brunswick and Boston.

Reviving three now-inactive state-owned rail corridors could provide more mobility options and offer alternatives to people priced out of Portland.

Portland police are still looking for anyone who might have known Raul Fabian Schneider or his relatives.

Amtrak police and Portland police are examing why no one aboard the Amtrak train noticed when the man was struck Sunday afternoon.

A relative of Lewis Bradley Jr., 62, said he was walking to a nearby pharmacy when he was struck from behind by an Amtrak Downeaster train Feb. 13.

More than 574,000 passengers rode the rail service last year, and there are plans for further improvements in southern Maine.

Main Street will be closed Saturday and Sunday, and Amtrak Downeaster service will be disrupted.

The agency that runs the passenger train will hold an open house Tuesday evening in Portland to introduce its ideas and get public feedback.
