LEBANON, ME – JANUARY 27: A photo of Kristina Emard in uniform at her mother Ann Howgate’s home. Howgate spoke about how excited her daughter was to be in the military and how she even wore the uniform when she came home for a visit, which is when the photo was taken. Later, while serving in South Korea, Emard was sexually assaulted by another soldier. Emard dealt with PTSD and other mental health issues and eventually became addicted to opiates. She died from an overdose of cocaine and fentanyl at 28. (Staff photo by Brianna Soukup/Staff Photographer)
