National birth rates by age of mother
More people are having children later in life, a trend reflected in a declining birth rate among women in their 20s and an increase for those in their 30s. Nationally, the birth rate among women ages 35 to 39 more than doubled between 1985 and 2012, to about 48 per 1,000 births. Maine has seen a similar trend. As a percentage of all births, deliveries by women age 35 and over have increased consistently since 1990. They've grown from about 9 percent in the United States overall to 15 percent.
