YARMOUTH — The town’s eligibility to create railroad quiet zones hasn’t been affected by the Feb. 23 accident between a train and a car at the North Road crossing.

Town Manager Nat Tupper on April 2 told town councilors that the Federal Railroad Administration’s re-evaluation still allows the town to ban trains from blowing their whistles at crossings if added safety measures are in place. The Town Council will vote on whether to establish quiet zones on April 16.

The Quiet Zone Committee on March 5 presented its report on how to best establish quiet zones, but the accident skewed results, because it was the first one to occur at that crossing. The FRA determined the accident didn’t reduce the safety score enough to disqualify the town from moving forward.

The committee has suggested channelization be put in place at the town’s three crossings, at a total cost of $250,000.
