The Maine Supreme Judicial Court will hear oral arguments Friday before deciding whether to take up the governor’s claim that he should have been allowed to veto the laws.

Votes on tax reform and welfare cuts will draw out conservative voters, but the effects of losing the revenue could hurt the party.

Rep. Kenneth Fredette of Newport will support Gov. Paul LePage and oppose the Legislature’s argument that 65 disputed bills are now law.

The salary increases for 11 of 12 Cabinet members and other top-level employees are part of a 2014 initiative to achieve pay parity with legislative staff, the administration says.

The request will be reviewed by the court during oral arguments on July 31.
