Girls Soccer: Clippers remain perfect

Devin Simsarian scored her seventh goal in the last four games Thursday night as Yarmouth became the lone unbeaten girls’ soccer team in Western Class B.

Simsarian sent a left-footed shot inside the right post from the left of the bubble in the 58th minute to propel the Clippers to a 1-0 victory against York, the defending state champion.

“I felt we kept working, kept pressing, and we didn’t back down,” said Yarmouth Coach Rich Smith. “Devin had a great game and a beautiful goal. She had four or five other chances just going hard at it.”

Scarborough prevails in showdown of unbeatens

Scarborough made the most of its scoring opportunities Thursday to become the only unbeaten girls’ soccer team in Western Class A.

Midfielders Erica Meader and Cortney Hughes scored during the first 30 minutes to lead the Red Storm to a 2-0 victory against previously unbeaten Cheverus in an SMAA game at Boulos Stadium.

“I think the number of (scoring) chances were relatively similar,” Cheverus Coach Dan LaVallee said. “They finished theirs and we didn’t finish ours.”

Mark Rogers: The start of a career

Peter Ladd has a good idea of what Mark Rogers will feel when he starts on the mound for the first time in a major league baseball game Friday night.

“Excitement,” said Ladd, who played Little League baseball in his native Portland before his family moved to Georgia. “I’m so excited for him because it’s just an unbelievable feeling.”

Rogers, a hard-throwing right-hander from Orrs Island, is scheduled to start against the Florida Marlins at Miller Park on Friday.

“He’s gotten to what his dream has always been, to make it to the major leagues,” said Ladd, who spent four of his six major league seasons with the Brewers as a relief pitcher.
