When Mike Lowe joined the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram’s staff in 1982, he never thought he was setting roots. But he learned to love Maine, its people, its games and, especially, its stories.
It’s hard to say what he covers because, well, he covers everything. Over the years he’s been fortunate to witness some of the biggest sports events in Maine and elsewhere, from the Little League World Series to the actual World Series, from an NCAA ice hockey championship for Maine to an AHL championship for the Portland Pirates, from seven Super Bowls for the Patriots to the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
He’s interviewed stars and personalities such as Muhammad Ali, Tom Brady, Seth Wescott, Michael Phelps, Ian Crocker, Paul Kariya, Julia Clukey, Kevin “Killer” Kaminski and Joan Benoit Samuelson. Yet his favorite stories often involve Maine high school sports and the passion they stir. Nothing compares to the bond between a high school and its town.
He collects comic books, loves listening to the Red Sox on the radio on a warm summer night or leaning back in his recliner with a good book. He also loves, absolutely loves, chocolate-covered peanuts.
A native of New Bedford, Mass., he lives in Saco with his wife Tracie and has three children and four grandchildren.

Lobster Bowl: A great game,relatively speaking
HEBRON — No one has to tell Kyle Bishop what it means to play in the Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl. The former Waterville High athlete has been attending the game and its practices for as long as he can remember.
His father, Brad, a varsity head coach in Maine for the last 21 falls, has been on the staff of 13 previous Lobster Bowls. His older brother, Cam, played three years ago and is now a junior wide receiver at Bowdoin College.
Kyle Bishop, a defensive back, has been there just about every summer.

Thornton summer programis all working out
SACO — Ask any teen-ager what they would like to be doing at 7 in the morning during summer vacation and most would probably answer sleeping.
Why, then, were nearly 100 Thornton Academy student-athletes jumping and stretching and skipping and squatting and running and sweating Monday morning at the school’s athletic fields?
Why, because they could, of course.
Twice a week, the students gather for a summer performance training program sponsored and run by Saco Bay Sports Physical Therapy. The program was offered free to Thornton students, who underwent baseline testing – exercises similar to those in the NFL Scouting combine: the 40-yard dash, vertical leaps, broad jumps, a medicine ball toss, agility drills, core stability drills – in mid-June and will meet twice a week for six weeks.
