FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Bill Belichick simply calls them “the next guy.” They are the New England Patriots reserves who are called on to step in and perform as well as the starters. In Sunday’s 29-26 overtime victory over the New York Jets, the two most prominent “next guys” were offensive linemen Donald Thomas and Nick […]
Mike Lowe
When Mike Lowe joined the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram’s staff in 1982, he never thought he was setting roots. But he learned to love Maine, its people, its games and, especially, its stories.
It’s hard to say what he covers because, well, he covers everything. Over the years he’s been fortunate to witness some of the biggest sports events in Maine and elsewhere, from the Little League World Series to the actual World Series, from an NCAA ice hockey championship for Maine to an AHL championship for the Portland Pirates, from seven Super Bowls for the Patriots to the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
He’s interviewed stars and personalities such as Muhammad Ali, Tom Brady, Seth Wescott, Michael Phelps, Ian Crocker, Paul Kariya, Julia Clukey, Kevin “Killer” Kaminski and Joan Benoit Samuelson. Yet his favorite stories often involve Maine high school sports and the passion they stir. Nothing compares to the bond between a high school and its town.
He collects comic books, loves listening to the Red Sox on the radio on a warm summer night or leaning back in his recliner with a good book. He also loves, absolutely loves, chocolate-covered peanuts.
A native of New Bedford, Mass., he lives in Saco with his wife Tracie and has three children and four grandchildren.
Patriots Beat: Ninkovich fine role model
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Rob Ninkovich reached into his locker and pulled a football off the shelf, holding it high for everyone to see. “I’m keeping this one,” he said. “Going on the mantel.” He should put that ball on display. How many defensive players can say they’re responsible for a walk-off win in the NFL? […]

Patriots Beat: Pats at 3-3 are not earth-shattering
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Yes, Tom Brady felt the earthquake that shook Maine and New England Tuesday night. And then he went to sleep. Being a native Californian, living near the San Andreas Fault, earthquakes don’t rattle Brady as much as they might, say, you and me. “The big one, ’89,” he said, referring to the […]
Volleyball Notebook: Greely, Biddeford are the favorites, but not locks
Gorham High volleyball coach Lisa Curley likes her team. She has great confidence in her players. But when asked who is favored in the upcoming Class A tournament, she didn’t hesitate with her answer: “Biddeford and Greely. They’re just tough. It’s not just one player, but six or seven that they can put out there […]
Dirigo steps up for 3-0 victory
Field hockey: The Cougars hold off Waynflete and pull away in the second half.
Patriots Beat: Primary concern – find leader in secondary
When someone has a question about the New England Patriots’ defensive line, Vince Wilfork steps forward to speak. Jerod Mayo does the same for the linebackers, often answering hard questions about execution and motivation. Who speaks for the secondary? No one. And therein perhaps lies the biggest problem facing the Patriots’ defense as they try […]
