From sports championships to a couple’s tender kiss or an Elvis impersonator about to take the stage, we look back at some or our best work from the year.
Michele McDonald
Michele has been the photo editor of the Portland Press Herald for five years. Previously she was a photographer for the Boston Globe, The Virginian-Pilot, and the Concord Monitor. She began her journalism career as a reporter/photographer for the Daily Eagle, in Claremont, NH.
Michele’s first camera was a Kodak Brownie Starflash camera, which she got when she was 9. She used it to take unusual family photos, like one of her youngest sister Megan refusing to move from the neighbor’s driveway. (Megan McDonald is the author of the Judy Moody and Stink series, well-known books for children). Michele still has the camera. It has a roll of undeveloped film in it, which she’ll get around to developing someday.
A college dropout (from Bensalem, an experimental college that no longer exists), Michele later won a mid-career Nieman fellowship to Harvard. She was a finalist for a feature photography Pulitzer Prize for her photos of a young woman choosing to die in hospice care. She was a juror for the Pulitzer prizes in photography in 2017, 2018 and 2019.

Greater Portland saw only a half inch of snow in December. With the exception of 1999, when the area had only a trace amount of snow, it’s the smallest amount since the National Weather Service began keeping records in 1882. In photos: Maine’s coast battered by yet another storm
Around 2 inches of rain fell Saturday in southern Maine, flooding low-lying streets and businesses, while a record-breaking high tide inundated the already-soggy coast, eroded beaches and washed away two iconic fishing shacks.

2023 Photos of the Year: Maine in mourning
On the night of Oct. 25, minutes after Lewiston police began fielding calls about multiple shootings in the city, the newspapers of the Maine Trust for Local News mobilized as one newsroom to learn everything we could about what would turn out to be the deadliest shooting in Maine history. On that night, 18 people were killed and 13 injured and a manhunt was launched to find the shooter. Photographers from the Sun Journal, the Kennebec Journal and the Portland Press Herald fanned out across the area to document it all – the fear, the shock, the anger, the manhunt, the extraordinary outpouring of shared grief and pain. This is some of their best work from those dark days.
