Kevin Thomas does not always write about baseball. It just seems that way, starting with his early days covering spring training for the St. Petersburg Times, to his current role of bi-locating at both Hadlock Field and Fenway Park, reporting on the Portland Sea Dogs and Boston Red Sox. In the off-season, he still writes about baseball, while venturing to hockey rinks and basketball arenas, especially when it comes to the University of Maine and local colleges. Thomas has received awards for his work, but his greatest prize is home, which includes one patient wife, nine children and an aging chocolate Labrador.

Kevin Thomas: Beckett sharpens up, gets ready for opener
FORT MYERS, Fla. – There was no more dangerous at-bat for the Red Sox on Monday night than from Tampa Bay minor league catcher Nevin Ashley. Never mind the home run that Ashley sent up into the wind and over the right-field wall in the third inning. It was Ashley’s dribbler in the fifth inning […]

On Baseball: Red Sox finally made Johnson a believer
FORT MYERS, Fla. — When there was an opening on the Boston Red Sox coaching staff back in November, assistant general manager Ben Cherington phoned Ron Johnson and told him he was a candidate for the job. On Baseball: It’s a hot corner for spot in the bullpen
FORT MYERS, Fla. — Stitching together the Boston Red Sox bullpen hasn’t been a major overhaul. Boston again will rely on the young arms of Jonathan Papelbon, Daniel Bard, Manny Delcarmen and Ramon Ramirez, along with crafty left-hander Hideki Okajima and possibly the newly acquired Boof Bonser. Then there’s the group of pitchers assigned to […]

FORT MYERS, Fla. — The starters are in. Red Sox Manager Terry Francona finally announced his rotation to begin the season, and the only slight surprise is an April 11 start for Clay Buchholz. On Baseball: No what-ifs: It was a trade that helped everyone
FORT MYERS, Fla. — A young, playful and skinny Hanley Ramirez played baseball at Hadlock Field in 2004 and 2005. Ramirez didn’t play his best baseball in Portland but he was, shall we say, entertaining. During a rain delay, he rode a bicycle through the stadium concourse. He would run through the clubhouse with a […]
