Bowdoin 82, UNE 55: Ironed-out press

After taking an 11-0 lead, the Bowdoin College women’s basketball team looked in danger of losing its advantage Tuesday night.

The University of New England closed to 18-13, aided by three 3-pointers.

Polar Bears Coach Adrienne Shibles called a timeout. The Bowdoin players got a quick refresher on defense, and they listened well.

Winter sports: Beginning, and building

Greely High boys’ basketball coach Ken Marks gathered close to 50 players at center court Monday. He went over what would happen over the next two hours, and he told them that after today’s practice, they would know if they made one of three teams.

It was a scene played out in high school gyms across the state as the winter sports season officially opened. Basketball, boys’ hockey, indoor track, swimming, wrestling and cheerleading could all begin practice Monday. Girls’ hockey started official practices on Nov. 8 while skiing’s official start date is Dec. 6.

For basketball, boys’ ice hockey, swimming, wrestling and indoor track, the regular season can begin on Dec. 10. Girls’ ice hockey can start its games for real this Friday.

Nor’easter warning

With a band of quick, swarming guards, the University of Southern Maine women’s basketball team pounced on loose balls, deflected passes and tried to shake up the University of New England.

Lesser teams have folded under the Huskies’ pressure.

But UNE has mighty expectations this year, and the Nor’easters stood their ground, topping USM 89-79 Monday night at Hill Gymnasium in the season opener for both teams.

Growing pains – and gains

They have to bus 35 minutes to practice, across the state line to an ice rink that is not fully enclosed.

For the York High girls’ hockey players, these are minor inconveniences.

“Sometimes, the fog rolls in and you can’t see the other side, but it’s hockey,” said junior Nicci Heroux.
