It’s a guessing game every year for Eric Royal, coach of the Marshwood/Traip Academy boys’ hockey team. Who will show up to the first practice? “I never know what we’re going to have for numbers,” Royal said. “We had our first sign-ups, we had 11 skaters and three goalies.” Two more skaters came aboard. That’s […]
Kevin Thomas
Kevin Thomas does not always write about baseball. It just seems that way, starting with his early days covering spring training for the St. Petersburg Times, to his current role of bi-locating at both Hadlock Field and Fenway Park, reporting on the Portland Sea Dogs and Boston Red Sox. In the off-season, he still writes about baseball, while venturing to hockey rinks and basketball arenas, especially when it comes to the University of Maine and local colleges. Thomas has received awards for his work, but his greatest prize is home, which includes one patient wife, nine children and an aging chocolate Labrador.

Hockey Notebook: Biddeford girls rebound to earn a playoff spot
Eleven games into the season, the Biddeford girls’ hockey season looked in serious trouble. The euphoria of a season-opening win over Scarborough was long gone. The Tigers were 3-8 and on a six-game losing streak. “We’ve had injuries, loss of players to other programs and academic suspensions that really put us back on our heels […]
Second at the moment
Thornton Academy is the second-best boys’ hockey team in Western Class A, proving it by continuing its surge.
“It’s the first time all year I felt like we were the opportunistic team,” Thornton Coach Shawn Rousseau said. “We played very steady. The first period was good, the second was great and the third even better.”
On Baseball: Tejada expected to continue upward climb at Hadlock
In July 2006, the Boston Red Sox announced the signing of a group of teenage Dominicans, including 16-year-olds Engel Beltre and Oscar Tejeda. Beltre, an outfielder, commanded a $575,000 signing bonus. Tejeda, a shortstop, received $525,000. Twelve months later, the Texas Rangers reportedly wanted one of them to complete a deal involving Rangers reliever Eric […]
Scarborough’s loss against St. Dominic has an upside
The Red Storm suffer a 4-1 loss but play a top-notch foe tough despite missing a top player.
