BOSTON — The Boston Red Sox worked the count against CC Sabathia, pushing his pitch count up quickly. They also got 10 hits against him over six innings. But the Sox could not beat the big left-hander Tuesday night, dropping a 5-2 decision to the New York Yankees in the opener of a three-game series […]
Kevin Thomas
Kevin Thomas does not always write about baseball. It just seems that way, starting with his early days covering spring training for the St. Petersburg Times, to his current role of bi-locating at both Hadlock Field and Fenway Park, reporting on the Portland Sea Dogs and Boston Red Sox. In the off-season, he still writes about baseball, while venturing to hockey rinks and basketball arenas, especially when it comes to the University of Maine and local colleges. Thomas has received awards for his work, but his greatest prize is home, which includes one patient wife, nine children and an aging chocolate Labrador.
On Baseball: No playoffs, but plenty of payoffs
PORTLAND – Five years ago, the Portland Sea Dogs were preparing for the playoffs that would end in Portland’s first and only Eastern League championship. Now, the Sea Dogs are trying to avoid producing the worst record in franchise history. That 2006 team brought a lot of joy to Hadlock Field, but believe it or […]
Going, going, officially gone
Any hopes of a postseason – if there had been any – are extinguished with a seventh straight loss to end an ugly 0-6 homestand.
Senators 4, Sea Dogs 1: The search continues
Portland keeps looking for offense and a lineup that works, but instead is stuck with another six-game losing streak.
Senators 4, Sea Dogs 1: Brilliant start, but dismal end
Starting pitcher Chris Balcom-Miller has his best outing yet, but the last-place Sea Dogs fail to stop the first-place Senators.
Decidedly steady progress
Portland Sea Dogs right-handed pitcher Brock Huntzinger has not won a game since July 6, and his ERA is 6.57. But it is conceivable that some major league team might want Huntzinger next year.
Huntzinger struck out 11 in six innings Sunday but earned another non-decision in a 7-6 Sea Dogs loss to the Binghamton Mets, before 6,568 at Hadlock Field.
Mets rally to nip Sea Dogs, 7-6
Binghamton scores twice in the seventh inning to send Portland to its fourth straight loss.
Quite a site for Hassan
The Sea Dogs lose, but Alex Hassan continues his impressive season with a big game at Fenway Park.
On Baseball: Down season, but Wagner remains up
BOSTON – Mark Wagner sat in the Boston Red Sox dugout Saturday morning, the smile ever on his face. If you asked the ever-confident Wagner three years ago about playing in Fenway Park, he would have said it was all part of the plan. But plans change. Back in the spring of 2008, Wagner was […]
