ORONO – When Michael Cole told the University of Maine football staff that he wanted to come to Orono, the coaches shook hands, smiled, and looked over their shoulders. “Michael was a guy we were so excited to get up here, to say he was coming to Maine,” Black Bears head coach Jack Cosgrove said. Kevin Thomas
Kevin Thomas does not always write about baseball. It just seems that way, starting with his early days covering spring training for the St. Petersburg Times, to his current role of bi-locating at both Hadlock Field and Fenway Park, reporting on the Portland Sea Dogs and Boston Red Sox. In the off-season, he still writes about baseball, while venturing to hockey rinks and basketball arenas, especially when it comes to the University of Maine and local colleges. Thomas has received awards for his work, but his greatest prize is home, which includes one patient wife, nine children and an aging chocolate Labrador.

Ryan Cameron pitched for 10 years in the minor leagues, from 1998 to 2007, playing for teams in 10 cities for three organizations — the Rockies, Red Sox and Phillies. His Red Sox years were 2003-04, when he pitched for both Double-A Portland and Triple-A Pawtucket. The Portland Sea Dogs and owner Dan Burke made […]

As the University of Maine football team prepares to play in front of over 20,000 hostile fans next week at Appalachian State, it is time to dispel one myth of home-field advantage. Sometimes, a large home crowd helps the visiting team, too. Back in the glory days of the Maine women’s basketball team, from 1994 […]

UMaine Beat: His time is coming in hockey
It just seems that Jacob Rutt has waited and waited.
