UMaine edges Merrimack 2-1 to advance to the Hockey East semifinals at TD Garden.
Kevin Thomas
Kevin Thomas does not always write about baseball. It just seems that way, starting with his early days covering spring training for the St. Petersburg Times, to his current role of bi-locating at both Hadlock Field and Fenway Park, reporting on the Portland Sea Dogs and Boston Red Sox. In the off-season, he still writes about baseball, while venturing to hockey rinks and basketball arenas, especially when it comes to the University of Maine and local colleges. Thomas has received awards for his work, but his greatest prize is home, which includes one patient wife, nine children and an aging chocolate Labrador.

Colleges: UMaine’s Sullivan a finely tuned goalie
ORONO – When sophomore Dan Sullivan prepares for another pressured game as goalie and cornerstone for the University of Maine hockey team, the pre-game music piped through his headphones is the throbbing beat of techno. But that hardly describes Sullivan’s game. His style is disciplined and thorough. Think classical. Mozart. Bach. For Sullivan, a 1-0 […]
Colleges: Polar Bears looking at rocky path to Final Four
BRUNSWICK — If Bowdoin College is going to make it to the Division III women’s basketball Final Four, the Polar Bears will certainly have to earn it. Bowdoin will play in a four-team sectional that includes three nationally ranked teams, two of them undefeated. The Polar Bears (21-7) will play No. 4 George Fox University […]
On Baseball: Expect a blend of old and new names for the Sea Dogs
In the first unofficial spring game for the Boston Red Sox — a “B” game Thursday against the Minnesota Twins — catcher Ryan Lavarnway homered in the first inning. The Portland Sea Dogs won’t see Lavarnway going deep at Hadlock Field again. Later in the game, catcher Dan Butler replaced Lavarnway and homered in the […]
