Do you like how General Manager Ben Cherington has infused new talent into the Boston Red Sox so far? Let’s make a list and check it twice. Cherington has signed five free agents this offseason: • David Ross. A backup catcher. • Jonny Gomes. An outfielder who is limited defensively and batted .209 against right-handed […]
Kevin Thomas
Kevin Thomas does not always write about baseball. It just seems that way, starting with his early days covering spring training for the St. Petersburg Times, to his current role of bi-locating at both Hadlock Field and Fenway Park, reporting on the Portland Sea Dogs and Boston Red Sox. In the off-season, he still writes about baseball, while venturing to hockey rinks and basketball arenas, especially when it comes to the University of Maine and local colleges. Thomas has received awards for his work, but his greatest prize is home, which includes one patient wife, nine children and an aging chocolate Labrador.

On Baseball: Red Sox roster taking shape, but team still has holes to fill
BOSTON – So the 40-man roster is down to 38, for now. The Boston Red Sox did not offer arbitration to relievers Rich Hill and Scott Atchison, and outfielder Ryan Sweeney. Hill and Atchison have bounced between Pawtucket and Boston so it’s conceivable that both could still come to spring training on minor league contracts. But […]
Red Claws Notebook: Suspension, ailments lead to call-up for Joseph
PORTLAND – Fans filing into the Portland Expo on Friday night may have been looking to see two members of the Boston Celtics playing for their Maine Red Claws. But Kris Joseph was not there. He was needed back in Boston — just in case. Playing against the Portland Trail Blazers, Boston had only 11 […]
