Kolbrin Vitek’s bases-loaded walk forces in the winning run in the ninth inning.
Kevin Thomas
Kevin Thomas does not always write about baseball. It just seems that way, starting with his early days covering spring training for the St. Petersburg Times, to his current role of bi-locating at both Hadlock Field and Fenway Park, reporting on the Portland Sea Dogs and Boston Red Sox. In the off-season, he still writes about baseball, while venturing to hockey rinks and basketball arenas, especially when it comes to the University of Maine and local colleges. Thomas has received awards for his work, but his greatest prize is home, which includes one patient wife, nine children and an aging chocolate Labrador.
Sea Dogs walk off with a gift
An error by New Britain allows two to score in the ninth.
On Baseball: Cautious hope springs for now
BOSTON – With firefighters from Bath serving as the color guard, Michela Boissonneault of Portland sang the national anthem, drawing cheers as she belted out “land of the free “ Maine Day at Fenway Park was off to a good start. It got better on a sun-splashed Sunday afternoon as the Boston Red Sox continued […]
Reliever Bard going back to the Dogs
BOSTON – The Red Sox announced Sunday that they are sending reliever Daniel Bard back to the Portland Sea Dogs. He made a rehab appearance in Pawtucket on Sunday, pitching […]

None of the three were teammates in Portland. It took a series of trades and transactions. Lowrie, 29, was […]

Brandon Moss: ‘I knew I could play up here’
The former Portland Sea Dogs slugger has plenty to feel good about in his second season with the Oakland A’s.
On Baseball: One eye on game, one on Boston
PORTLAND – In the Portland Sea Dogs’ win Friday night, Pete Ruiz pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning. Later that night, his future father-in-law, Bob Bonina, sent him a text: “Good job. We both closed it out tonight.” While Ruiz was striking out the three batters he faced, Bonina wore a different kind of uniform as […]
Sea Dogs building momentum
Portland holds off a New Britain comeback and picks up its third consecutive win over the Rock Cats.
On Baseball: The kid’s a man, and expecting to meet those expectations
PORTLAND – Michael Almanzar showed enough tangibles for the Boston Red Sox to gamble. Go down the checklist: • Athletic, with a body that had potential for power. • Obvious baseball skills. • Good bloodlines. His father was a major leaguer. So the Red Sox opened up owner John Henry’s checkbook and wrote out seven […]
