Two months of high-quality amateur baseball gets under way at Sanford and Old Orchard Beach.
Kevin Thomas
Kevin Thomas does not always write about baseball. It just seems that way, starting with his early days covering spring training for the St. Petersburg Times, to his current role of bi-locating at both Hadlock Field and Fenway Park, reporting on the Portland Sea Dogs and Boston Red Sox. In the off-season, he still writes about baseball, while venturing to hockey rinks and basketball arenas, especially when it comes to the University of Maine and local colleges. Thomas has received awards for his work, but his greatest prize is home, which includes one patient wife, nine children and an aging chocolate Labrador.
On Baseball: Part-timers put on a full-time show
BOSTON – David Ortiz, Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Stephen Drew belted some of the big hits Tuesday night in the Red Sox 17-5 romp over the Texas Rangers. But look at a few other contributing names: Nava. Iglesias. Bradley. Carp. The depth of this Boston team, and its American League-leading 36 wins, continues to amaze. You […]

Starter Matt Barnes of the Sea Dogs doesn’t make it out of the second inning in a 13-6 loss.
On Baseball: Red Sox well-positioned to land a top prospect in draft
BOSTON – That 69-93 record in 2012 had at least one benefit. The Boston Red Sox hold the No. 7 pick in this year’s major league baseball draft, which begins Thursday. It’s the best draft pick Boston has had in 20 years. Back in 1993, the Red Sox chose a high school outfielder from North […]
Sea Dogs’ duo dynamic in a 9-1 victory
Anthony Ranaudo is dominant in seven innings, and Xavier Bogaerts hits two homers for Portland.
Pedro Martinez visits Portland
The former Red Sox pitcher shares his expertise with Sea Dogs pitchers.
11th-inning loss is Sea Dogs’ fourth straight
New Hampshire scores three times in the 11th inning for a 6-3 win at Hadlock Field.
On Baseball: Sox have plenty of heart, but can they be consistent?
BOSTON – They jumped onto each other in joy, many of the Red Sox running onto the playing field before the winning run came across. There was no doubt Stephen Drew would score that game-winner, completing a four-run ninth inning for a 6-5 victory over the Cleveland Indians. Do you doubt these Red Sox can […]
On Baseball: Varitek was in town, with praise for Vazquez
PORTLAND – Catchers jumped into the spotlight at Hadlock Field last week. Matt Spring is shining in limited playing time. David Ross stopped by for a rehab appearance. Christian Vazquez, who opened eyes in spring training, is now looking even better. And even former Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek visited, part of his new role […]
On Baseball: The visitor in a place once home
BOSTON – John Farrell and Terry Francona both looked chipper Thursday afternoon. Farrell has occupied the Red Sox manager’s office only a short time. Francona has been away from it long enough to recover. “Lot of attention and demands that might be different here,” Farrell said of the job. “But those are the things you […]
