BOSTON – The day began with a feel-good story at Fenway Park. Then it got strange then frustrating. Relief followed. And finally defeat. The feel-good story featured Jonathan Diaz sitting in the Red Sox dugout before the game, beaming. Just 90 minutes earlier, Diaz, 28, was in Rhode Island with his wife, Kerry, and three […]
Kevin Thomas
Kevin Thomas does not always write about baseball. It just seems that way, starting with his early days covering spring training for the St. Petersburg Times, to his current role of bi-locating at both Hadlock Field and Fenway Park, reporting on the Portland Sea Dogs and Boston Red Sox. In the off-season, he still writes about baseball, while venturing to hockey rinks and basketball arenas, especially when it comes to the University of Maine and local colleges. Thomas has received awards for his work, but his greatest prize is home, which includes one patient wife, nine children and an aging chocolate Labrador.
Ranaudo now can devour batters
Bellying up to the plate during the offseason makes the Sea Dogs pitcher bigger, stronger.
Weather puts end to series for Dogs
Portland is rained out for the second straight night, and the games will be made up at Binghamton.
Four Sea Dogs named to All-Star team
Pitchers Drake Britton and Anthony Ranaudo, infielder Michael Almanzar and catcher Christian Vazquez will play for the East team.
Kevin Thomas: Cecchini & baseball, a heavenly match
PORTLAND – Garin Cecchini knows baseball well, a true student of the sport. Maybe it’s because he took in his first game when he was 4 days’ old. Or the lessons could have begun earlier, while he was still in the womb and his mom was coaching first base. The Red Sox promoted Cecchini, 22, […]
Dogs’ ace battles in loss
Anthony Ranaudo isn’t sharp, but still lasts six innings in a 3-0 loss to the first-place Mets.
On Baseball: Red Sox may be wary of trade for closer
As the Boston Red Sox search for a closer while holding on to first place, the team can go in several directions. Trades are always inviting, though Boston’s recent trades for closers haven’t worked out so well. Consider the stats of some of those relievers before they were acquired. How about a 31-year-old with 16 […]
On Baseball: The stars are in motion at Hadlock
The Boston Red Sox and Portland Sea Dogs were not the only teams taking the day off on Monday. The Salem Red Sox began their Carolina League All-Star break on Monday. It can be a significant period, if any Red Sox prospects are standing out. They not only are All-Stars, but are destined soon for […]
Britton impresses again as Sea Dogs top Aeros
Drake Britton pitches seven strong innings and Peter Hissey goes 3 for 5 in Portland’s 7-4 win.
Sea Dogs still quiet at plate, muster just 5 hits in loss
With Xander Bogaerts off to greener Pawtucket, Portland’s roster ranks 11th in the league on offense.
