Carl Yastrzemski, who played 23 seasons with the Boston Red Sox, gets his own statue outside the ballpark.
Kevin Thomas
Kevin Thomas does not always write about baseball. It just seems that way, starting with his early days covering spring training for the St. Petersburg Times, to his current role of bi-locating at both Hadlock Field and Fenway Park, reporting on the Portland Sea Dogs and Boston Red Sox. In the off-season, he still writes about baseball, while venturing to hockey rinks and basketball arenas, especially when it comes to the University of Maine and local colleges. Thomas has received awards for his work, but his greatest prize is home, which includes one patient wife, nine children and an aging chocolate Labrador.

On Baseball: Sox need October heroes, but who will step up?
BOSTON — Now what? The Boston Red Sox won their first American League East title in six years. While winning games remains important – and claiming the best record in the AL to earn home-field advantage in the playoffs – Boston can also look ahead. Here are a few players and topics to keep an […]
Bonny Eagle stays perfect
The Scots erase a halftime deficit and hand Sanford its first defeat, 19-6.
On Baseball: Salty’s caught on as pressure catcher
BOSTON – When the Boston Red Sox begin playing October baseball, Jason Varitek will not be catching. It’s been a while. The last Red Sox playoffs that did not include Varitek took place in 1995. Since then, Tek’s presence has been felt. He was the captain. The leader. Jarrod Saltalamacchia is not Jason Varitek. He […]
On Baseball: Peavy’s tinkering with his delivery
BOSTON – Clay Buchholz is not the only Red Sox pitcher rebuilding for the postseason. Jake Peavy allowed three runs over seven innings, but showed progress Wednesday. He walked one batter (and hit another) after walking eight in his previous two games. “He’s still fine-tuning,” Red Sox Manager John Farrell said. Fine-tuning in September? Despite […]
On Baseball: Red Sox aren’t quite ready to drink in their success
BOSTON – Players exited the showers and walked through a quiet clubhouse. There would be no celebratory toasts this Tuesday night. “It was a tough one,” pitcher Ryan Dempster said. “We were right there. We had a chance.” Tuesday’s 3-2 loss to Baltimore was not a backbreaker by any stretch. It only delayed the inevitable […]
On Baseball: Buchholz a little rusty, but another strong outing
BOSTON – The second “spring training” for Clay Buchholz continued Sunday night, with the right-hander showing the rust we expected to see last week. Buchholz walked four and hit another (on a pitch that would have been ball four anyway). But Sunday still was a success. “If he walks out to start the sixth inning, […]
On Baseball: Success no surprise to Sox
BOSTON – They are 91-59 with a dozen games to go. We’re not only talking about a bunch of wins for the Boston Red Sox, we’re talking about 32 games above .500. More than 30 games above average. Know the last time Boston finished a season at that milestone? It was the last game of […]
Lester sharp again as Red Sox dump Yankees
Jon Lester continues his strong second half with eight impressive innings in a 5-1 victory.
