BOSTON – John Lackey almost chuckled at the question. Lackey, who is getting the start Saturday in Game 2, was asked if it was tough to keep emotions under control. As if Lackey ever tries to control his emotions. “I’m going to be emotional,” Lackey said. “I’m going to be fired-up. That’s part of the […]
Kevin Thomas
Kevin Thomas does not always write about baseball. It just seems that way, starting with his early days covering spring training for the St. Petersburg Times, to his current role of bi-locating at both Hadlock Field and Fenway Park, reporting on the Portland Sea Dogs and Boston Red Sox. In the off-season, he still writes about baseball, while venturing to hockey rinks and basketball arenas, especially when it comes to the University of Maine and local colleges. Thomas has received awards for his work, but his greatest prize is home, which includes one patient wife, nine children and an aging chocolate Labrador.

To really appreciate the regular season the Red Sox completed on Sunday in Baltimore, you have to recall how it all ended in 2012: Daisuke Matsuzaka on the mound. Bobby […]
On Basketball: Everything’s good for the Red Claws’ coach
WALTHAM, Mass. – Mike Taylor looked energized Saturday, walking around in the comfortable environment of a gymnasium, filled with the sounds of basketballs bouncing and sneakers squeaking. Taylor, entering his second year as coach of the Maine Red Claws, oversaw a tryout Saturday at the Boston Celtics’ training facility (the Red Claws are the D-League affiliate […]

On Baseball: Many reasons for Red Sox revival, but improved pitching tops list
Over the next week, we will be hearing all about the Red Sox transformation. Stop me if you’ve heard this phrase before: Worst to first. We will look at reasons for the change, from the general manager (see C1 story) to the manager, to the clubhouse atmosphere. But one reason for success is obvious. It’s […]
