BOSTON – Max Scherzer said it does not matter that he went 21-3 this season with a 2.90 ERA and is the likely American League Cy Young Award winner. Whether he’s at the top of his game in 2013, or back in 2008 when he was a Diamondbacks rookie, Scherzer brings the same attitude to […]
Kevin Thomas
Kevin Thomas does not always write about baseball. It just seems that way, starting with his early days covering spring training for the St. Petersburg Times, to his current role of bi-locating at both Hadlock Field and Fenway Park, reporting on the Portland Sea Dogs and Boston Red Sox. In the off-season, he still writes about baseball, while venturing to hockey rinks and basketball arenas, especially when it comes to the University of Maine and local colleges. Thomas has received awards for his work, but his greatest prize is home, which includes one patient wife, nine children and an aging chocolate Labrador.

On Baseball: Once teammates at Hadlock Field, now opponents at Fenway Park
BOSTON – They were a pair of promising 21-year-old pitchers. Portland Sea Dogs teammates Jon Lester and Anibal Sanchez both pitched in the 2005 Eastern League playoffs. “I think we were probably completely different pitchers back then,” Lester said. “Naive, young, stupid; you know, throwers. “But obviously watching him over the past couple of years […]
On Baseball: Going to the Red Sox bullpen for relief is no longer a pain
Now the Sox feature a three-headed monster, or if you like the boxing analogies, Boston can jab with the left and jab with the right before delivering the knockout blow from its closer.
On Baseball: Bogaerts shows he belongs
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Among the joyful scenes in the Red Sox clubhouse at Tropicana Field Tuesday night — bleeding into Wednesday morning — was a smiling 21-year-old, his shirt drenched in champagne and, like many of his teammates, equipped with goggles to protect his eyes form the bubbly. Red Sox Notebook: Farrell says decisions in Game 3 were sound
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Reporters filed into John Farrell’s office for the regular pregame chat Tuesday night. Before a question could be asked, Farrell began. “So, last night.” Then he smiled. Farrell knew there would be inquiries to how he managed Monday night’s 5-4 loss to the Rays. Specifically, two moves that Farrell did not […]
