CAPE ELIZABETH – A passenger from a canoe headed for Richmond Island was rescued tonight, said Steve Young, Cape Elizabeth’s deputy fire chief. The canoe left from Kettle Cove with three passengers heading for the island where a group was camping out. However, witnesses saw it head in another direction, Young said. The paddlers made it […]
Deirdre Fleming
Deirdre Fleming covers the outdoors for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram, and has been a newspaper reporter in Maine for 25 years - and an outdoor writer for the past 20. During that time, she’s seen biologists trap 500-pound bear, watched fishermen land high-jumping makos, camped on Moosehead Lake in the winter, and retraced Gov. Percival Baxter’s first trip to Mt. Katahdin. She is often asked, but still does not know her favorite wildland in Maine. A graduate of Georgetown University and the University of Missouri, she lives with her husband in Buxton near the Saco River, where they both fly fish.

100-Mile Wilderness keeps getting better
The 100-Mile Wilderness is known as a hiking haven, the section of the Appalachian Trail between Monson and Mount Katahdin. But the Appalachian Mountain Club’s land purchase in this area last winter is increasing the get-out goodness in this wild area. For right now, it means more wild brook trout fishing, more mountain biking, canoeing […]
Freshwater Fishing: Caddis hatches make Moosehead prime
Bass fishing seems to be the word across the state, however, the Moosehead Lake region is hot for everything else. The caddis hatches around the big lake have resulted in good river fishing and the flat water action is peak right now, say biologists with the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. REGION A: SOUTHERN […]
