A New Hampshire man was arrested in York late Friday night after leading police on a high-speed chase.
Eric Harris, 36, of Lincoln, New Hampshire, was charged with aggravated reckless conduct, attempting to elude a police officer, passing a police roadblock and operating under the influence, said Sgt. Luke Ernenwein of the York Police Department. Harris also had an outstanding warrant for his arrest from the Grafton County Sheriff’s Office in New Hampshire for failure to register as a sex offender, according to Ernenwein.
The chase started at 11:47 p.m., when Harris, driving a 2006 Subaru Outback, allegedly sped away from a traffic stop on Long Beach Avenue, which is Route 1. Ernenwein said an officer had tried to stop Harris on suspicion of operating under the influence and that Harris was the only occupant in the vehicle.
Harris first drove north on Long Beach Avenue and then turned around and headed north, driving through a police roadblock, Ernenwein said. A spike mat at the roadblock shredded three of his car’s tires and Harris hit a large rock on the side of the road after he turned onto Ocean Avenue Extension. His car came to a stop on the front lawn of a house, police said, and then Harris ran off into a backyard. Harris continued to resist officers, police said, and he was ultimately subdued after police used a Taser on him.
Harris is being held on $15,000 bail at the York County Jail in Alfred. He is also being held without bail on the warrant from New Hampshire, Ernenwein said.
