Voters strongly rejected a development proposal for the former North Yarmouth School in elections Tuesday, according to unofficial results from the town.
Residents voted the plan down 968-360, defeating the proposal with 71 percent of the vote.
The proposal, from local company A.H. Grover, would have renovated parts of the school and rebuilt Wescustogo Hall in exchange for 10 acres for a housing development. The plan would cost North Yarmouth approximately $500,000. But opponents said the plan was not the right fit for the town and fought a campaign to reject it and come up with a new proposal.
Five candidates vied for two open three-year seats on the Board of Selectmen.
Former Selectwoman Anne Graham won a seat with 796 votes. Incumbent Selectman James Mouton and newcomer Peter Lacy tied for second place, with 408 votes each. It was unclear Tuesday night how the tie would be broken. Nelson Smith got 299 votes and Paul “Chip” Metevier came in last with 164 votes.
Former Selectman Paul Napolitano won a one-year seat on the board in an uncontested election and Kevin Desmond ran unopposed for a seat on the School Administrative District 51 board of directors. David Hyde was elected to a five-year seat on the cemetery commission in an uncontested race.
